After a period of absence, Jupiter's moon Io has returned to its rightful place, joining the ranks of Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. This addition marks a significant milestone for the model, which has been a beacon of scientific and artistic excellence for over two decades.
The model, spanning 150 miles across northern Maine, is a testament to the dedication of its creator, Kevin McCartney, and the countless volunteers who have contributed their time and effort. Io, the newly installed moon, is a golf-ball-sized sphere, measuring a mere 1.6 inches in diameter. Its creation involved a collaborative effort, with MPG Truck and Tractor in Presque Isle taking down and repainting the 15-foot pole that supports it. High school students, including Jessica Goodwin's daughter, Izzy Goodwin, Claire Brissette, and Willow Rancourt, played a pivotal role in bringing Io to life with their artistic talents. The final touches were added by airbrushing, thanks to the expertise of Stacey Turner from the Caribou Technology Center.
The model's appeal extends beyond its scientific accuracy. It has become a cultural landmark, attracting tourists and locals alike. McCartney notes that while winter sports draw crowds, the solar system model has its own unique allure.
